Hey guys, I just received an email about the American Heart Association’s new “Be the Beat” initiative, which focuses on fun ways to educate teens on the basics of CPR. This sounds like an amazing program, and I just wanted to spread the word about it. Read on to learn more!
———-
“Did you know that you can save someone’s life just by knowing “(You Drive Me) Crazy,” “Bombastic Love,” “I Will Be There,” “My Baby,” and “What It’s Like To Be Me” by Britney Spears? All of those songs are 100-beats-per-minute, which is also the correct rate for chest compressions during hands-only CPR. You can visit http://bethebeat.heart.org/ to learn more about “Be the Beat” and hands-only CPR. You can also check out this video for how to perform hands-only CPR: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GMjXrFig7M4
Be the Beat, the American Heart Association’s new online cardiac arrest awareness campaign, teaches 12- to 15-year-olds fun ways to learn the basics of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED). Video games, interactive quizzes and 100-beat-per-minute songs can help teach teens and tweens what to do if someone collapses in sudden cardiac arrest.
The Basics: Three instructional videos that demonstrate conventional CPR with breaths, Hands-OnlyTM CPR and how to use an AED.
The Heart Trek Experience: Virtual tour through a 3-D animated version of the heart in which participants earn points by playing video games and taking interactive quizzes.
The World of Hearts: Users create unique avatars, track and compare their scores in the Heart Track Experience with other users and view profiles and testimonies of other participants.
Music Playlist: A downloadable playlist of 100-beat-per-minute songs (100 beats per minute is the correct rate for chest compressions during CPR).
Stuff: Free printable stickers, T-shirt decals and stationery, and free downloadable widgets and wallpapers.
The Web site also features a section for teachers and administrators who want to implement a CPR/AED education program in their schools. Free downloadable lesson plans and templates for creating and sustaining an in-school emergency response plan are included in the teacher/administrator portion of the site, BetheBeat.heart.org/schools.
“Be the Beat is helping to create the next generation of lifesavers by empowering teens and tweens to act when they see someone suddenly collapse,” said Michael Sayre, M.D., chair of the American Heart Association’s Emergency Cardiovascular Care Committee. “Sadly, far too many people are dying from cardiac arrest – we want this campaign to inspire people to help save lives.”
During a cardiac arrest, the heart suddenly stops beating normally and the victim collapses into unconsciousness. Oxygen-rich blood stops circulating. Without quick action, such as immediate CPR, a victim of cardiac arrest can die within four to six minutes.
Every day, nearly 800 Americans suffer sudden cardiac arrest at home, at work or in other public locations, and less than eight percent of them survive to hospital discharge, according to the American Heart Association. However, studies show providing CPR can more than double or triple a cardiac arrest victim’s chance of survival. But less than one-third of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest victims receive that help.
By increasing the number of people who know how to respond properly to sudden cardiac arrest, Be the Beat will help increase the odds of bystander CPR and AED use and give more cardiac arrest victims a better chance at life.
Be the Beat is funded by a $1 million grant from the Medtronic Foundation.

“THE magazine Portfolio has enumerated the vast amounts of money Britney Spears is worth, not just to herself but to others as well – about $US110 million ($116 million) to $US120 million annually to the struggling US economy. This is what Portfolio calls the Britney Industrial Complex.
Spears’s ubiquity goes without question. She gets the sort of coverage only dictators, potentates or absolute monarchs can command or even dream of. “Between January 2006 and July 2007, Britney was a cover subject of People, Us Weekly, In Touch, Life & Style, OK!, or Star a total of 175 times in just 78 weeks,” Portfolio tells us. And on Yahoo! she was the No. 1 search subject in six of the past seven years. Her single slip to No. 2 came in 2004, when she was bested by Paris Hilton – a dark year for us all.
Portfolio says a Las Vegas nightclub reportedly sold seats next to Spears’s table for $US50,000. Spears herself gets a reported $US250,000 to $US400,000 just to appear at an event, giving new meaning to Woody Allen’s observation that “90 percent of success in life is just showing up”.
Portfolio’s point is that Spears is big business – and ought to be viewed that way. She still makes oodles of money for herself – about $US9 million a year, the magazine says – and maybe has a personal fortune of about $US125 million. In a way, though, she is worth as much to others as she is to herself. One photo agency, X17, sold Spears pictures worth $US2.5 million in 2007, and while it did not do better with Britney than Britney did, it didn’t have to pay Kevin Federline $35,000 a month in child and ex-spouse support.
Portfolio’s Britney Industrial Complex illustrates the economy’s need for celebrities. Vast amounts of money can be made by manufacturing ones who appeal particularly to the young. Spears was once one of those, although at age 26 she has leapt that demographic boundary. Still, the breadth of her drawing power cannot be fully estimated. Portfolio’s concoction does not, for instance, measure her worth to the morning television shows. Nor can it measure what she is worth to us as a topic of common interest for our water-cooler moments. Even this story has, in a sense, exploited her.”
“Miley Cyrus assembled some of her Hollywood pals for an eBay auction to benefit the American Red Cross for Haiti relief. The highest winning item was a Versace dress worn by Britney Spears.
After 75 bids, the dress fetched $8,100 during the eBay auction. It was the most successful of the auctions, which included signed tour costumes from Demi Lovato and tickets to the premiere of Cyrus’ upcoming movie, “The Last Song.”
The sparkling Versace dress was worn by Spears when she picked up three awards at the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards for her clip “Piece of Me.” The silvery lavender dress was custom-made for Spears for the event. The auction even revealed the dress’ measurements, revealing that it measured 15 inches from underarm to underarm and 37 inches from top to bottom.
The auction helped raise thousands of dollars for Haiti relief. Another winning bids include $3,550 for Cyrus’ Herve Leger mini-dress worn to this year’s Grammy Awards, while a meet and greet with Hugh Jackman on the set of his next movie scored a winning bid of $4,800.”
She must have been saving her allowance. Britney Spears just spent $700,000 renovating her Calabasas, Calif., home – with $150,000 going for furniture, $200,000 for artwork, $100,000 for a bathroom, $150,000 for electronics and close to $100,000 for Venetian plaster walls. “Britney remodeled her entire home,” says a source of the singer, who’s reportedly on a $1,500-per-week allotment from dad/conservator Jamie Spears. “She loves spending money.”
Britney Spears is back in frilly bikinis, platform shoes and short shorts in another round of Candie’s Only at Kohl’s ads set to make their debut in magazines this spring. This time, the pop star worked with some of the industry’s top photographers for the “Britney Spears Through the Lens” ad campaign.
Spears worked with Annie Leibovitz, Mark Seliger and Terry Richardson for the photos, shot in Hollywood at the Paramount studios in late 2009. “Annie, Mark and Terry are three of the biggest photographers in the world. I am honored to be working with them for my Candie’s Only at Kohl’s ads,” Spears said. “It was an amazing shoot, and I know my fans are going to love the cool images. … I’m very excited to be working with Candie’s for a second season.”
Richardson and Leibovitz shot Spears in front of simple backdrops. Seliger designed a “Moulin Rogue”-inspired setting for his photographs and also had Spears pose on a motorcycle. In 2009, Spears followed in the footsteps of other famous faces endorsing the brand — Hilary Duff, Fergie, Jenny McCarthy and Alyssa Milano, to name a few — and was shot by Mark Liddell for the spring campaign.
Of the latest Candie’s collection, Spears said she likes the dresses the best. “They’re actually very fitted and flattering for women,” she said.
“Lawyers for the conservatorship running Britney Spears’ life are on the move again, this time fighting to keep details about Britney and her children private.
“Critical information” must be safeguarded, attorneys Geraldine Wyle and Jeryll Cohen say, fearing personal and medical information will leak to the media.
They want the info put under legal lock and key, pronto.
“A Google search for Britney Spears yields 54,300,000 hits,” the lawyers note. “Personal information of a confidential nature (such as medical information of Ms. Spears and her two children), can reap thousands if not millions of dollars.”
Not to mention pics of a scruffy Jason Trawick.
That is true, without question. But what “sensitive info” specifically are they talking about? What hasn’t leaked to this point that could possibly damage Britney Spears anymore? She is the most bulletproof celebrity in terms of fan support.
Just the same, the information is so sensitive the lawyers note on the open market “The possibility of enormous profits presents a substantial risk that Ms. Spears’ most confidential medical and personal information will be disclosed.”
So the attorneys are looking to have the sensitive info about Britney, Sean Preston and Jayden James contained in court documents sealed, and promptly.”
